The OctoPre MkII is an eight-channel expansion box with 24-bit/96kHz capable output via an optical connection.  Its brother, the MkII Dynamic, also features VCA-based feed-forward compression based around the THAT4301 analog engine, 4056 mux, and NJM2901 comparators. Conversion is built around the Cirrus Logic CS4274 codec. Analog stage duties are handled by the commonly found JRC family of op-amps, which are found in other members of the Focusrite digital family. Clock management and ADAT/SMUX functionality is handled by the Dice 2 chipset, which has JET PLL circuitry we really like.

Product Description

For the OctoPre analog path, we like to use Burr Brown’s 2134 op-amp because of its nice combination of slew rate, sonic density, and audio band noise performance.  For the conversion stage, we implement our own proprietary approach to converter decoupling. This gives a much smoother sonic quality to the audio signal as compared to the textbook approach, and eliminates much of the wooly, lumpy mid-band behavior so often associated with converters these days. On the Platinum version, we also replace all of the signal path caps to help retain incoming signal quality.

The scale is from 1-10, with “1” being unimpressive audio quality and “10” being true audio excellence. This is an exponential scale, so going from “1” to “2” isn’t nearly as big of a jump as going from “9” to “10”.
