Avid Mbox 3 Pro Mods

The Mbox 3 Pro is Avid’s redesign of the old consumer-grade Pro Tools interface, the Mbox 2, but now has Cirrus Logic CS4272 converters, which feature 24-bit/192kHz conversion and a dynamic range of 114dB. They gave it a load of features like onboard DSP, Softclip limiting, digital I/O, guitar tuner, and six balanced outs to mix in 5.1 surround sound. It’s not too bad for an entry-level piece of gear, but it sure could be a whole lot better – and that’s where we come in.

*A 50% down payment will be collected during checkout. The remainder 50% will be due when the modification is complete. You will receive a confirmation email with your scheduled mod date after we receive your down payment. The interface is not included in the mod price. Please click on the “Disclaimer & Warranty” tab below for more information on how to schedule a mod.

Product Description

There are two different modifications available for the Mbox 3 Pro:

Standard Modification

The Mbox 3 Pro Standard Modification consists of completely replacing all of the existing inexpensive stock op-amps with faster, high-grade op-amps that sound much more open, detailed and textured, with far better micro-dynamics.  The modification makes the stock Mbox 3 Pro sound quite hazy, undefined and flat in comparison.

Premium Modification

The Mbox 3 Pro Premium Modification includes everything in the Standard Mod, but goes a step beyond.  In addition to the new op-amps, we also install new audio-grade electrolytic capacitors that dramatically improve bass response and tame the brittle-sounding high end noticeable with the Mbox 3 Pro.  Most “affordable” audio gear use low-grade capacitors that will work okay, but just don’t sound very musical in the audio signal paths.  We choose premium audio-grade caps that are MADE ESPECIALLY for processing audio signals and make a huge difference in the resulting sound.  This kind of rich tone is very difficult, if not impossible, to find in low-powered recording interfaces like the Mbox 3 Pro, but can now be yours at a great price.

Sonic Quality

The scale is from 1-10, with “1” being unimpressive audio quality and “10” being true audio excellence. This is an exponential scale, so going from “1” to “2” isn’t nearly as big of a jump as going from “9” to “10”.

Micro Clock Bundle

Create a winning team by adding the Micro Clock to your modification, and save money! By making the Micro Clock your master clock, you’ll dramatically increase the sampling precision of your digital gear. This will provide you with a more “3-dimensional” sound-stage full of detail and space.

We schedule modifications according to demand. The next available “mod” date is listed on our website. Modifications can be scheduled online or by email ( We require a 50% down payment in order to secure your spot on our “mod” calendar.
